How to Choose the Right PCB Assembly Partner

A practical framework for evaluating PCBA manufacturers — from certifications and equipment to communication and lead times.

← Back to Blog

Choosing the right PCB assembly partner is one of the most critical decisions for any electronics company. The wrong choice can lead to delayed launches, quality issues, and unexpected costs.

Here is a practical framework to help you evaluate potential partners:

1. Check Certifications First

ISO 9001 is table stakes. If you need automotive, medical, or aerospace assemblies, IATF 16949, ISO 13485, or AS9100 are non-negotiable. Ask for current certificates — not copies from 3 years ago.

2. Evaluate Equipment & Capacity

The quality of SMT lines matters more than the quantity. Look for:

  • Leading brands: Yamaha, Panasonic, ASM (not generic Chinese machines)
  • AOI + X-Ray on every line (not just spot-check)
  • SPI (solder paste inspection) before reflow

Tip: Ask for photos or a video tour of the factory floor. A partner who is transparent about their facility is usually transparent about everything else.

3. Communication Matters

You want an English-speaking project manager who responds within 24 hours. Test this before placing an order — send a technical question and see how fast they reply.

4. Ask About DFM

A good partner provides free DFM (Design for Manufacturing) review. They should flag potential issues like insufficient clearances, missing reference designators, or tombstone risks before production starts.

5. Start Small

Place a prototype order first. Evaluate quality, communication, and delivery speed before committing to volume production. Most good manufacturers offer 24h prototyping for exactly this reason.

Understanding PCBA Costs: A Complete Guide

Breaking down the key factors that determine PCB assembly pricing — from board complexity to component sourcing.

💬 Talk to Our Team →
Back to Blog

PCBA pricing can seem opaque, but it follows predictable patterns. Understanding the cost drivers helps you optimize your design and negotiate better pricing.

Cost DriverImpactHow to Optimize
PCB Layers4-layer costs about 2x of 2-layerUse 2 layers whenever possible
Component CountMore components = more placement timeConsolidate passive components
BGA/QFN PackagesRequires X-Ray inspectionMinimize fine-pitch packages
Lead Time24h express costs 30-50% premiumPlan ahead for standard lead times
Sourcing DifficultyLead times vary by componentUse standard in-stock parts

Typical Cost Breakdown

  • PCB Fabrication: 15-25% of total
  • Component Sourcing: 40-60% (varies wildly)
  • SMT Assembly: 15-25%
  • Testing and QC: 5-10%
  • Packaging and Shipping: 3-5%

Tip: For prototype runs, most of the cost is in setup (stencils, programming, solder paste). Adding 10 more boards often costs only $20-50 extra.

SMT vs DIP: Which Assembly Method Is Right?

Surface-mount and through-hole technologies each have strengths. Here is how to choose the right approach for your project.

← Back to Blog

Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Through-Hole (DIP) are the two main PCB assembly methods. Each has distinct advantages depending on your application.

FactorSMTDIP / Through-Hole
Component SizeSmall (0201, 0402)Larger, easier to handle
Board DensityHigh — both sidesLower — one side typically
Mechanical StrengthModerateHigh (leads through board)
Prototyping CostLower for high volumeLower for small batches
High-FrequencyExcellent (shorter paths)Poor (longer leads = inductance)
Manual ReworkRequires hot air stationEasy with soldering iron

When to Use Each

Use SMT for: Consumer electronics, IoT devices, wearables, high-density boards, mass production.

Use DIP for: Power electronics, connectors, relays, transformers, prototypes.

Mixed technology (both SMT and DIP on the same board) is common — and most professional manufacturers handle both.

5 Common PCB Design Mistakes That Increase Costs

Avoid these design pitfalls to keep your PCBA project on budget and on schedule.

← Back to Blog

Even experienced engineers make these mistakes. The good news: they are easy to fix once you know what to look for.

1. Insufficient Clearance Between Components

Tight spacing between components makes soldering and inspection difficult. Rule of thumb: keep at least 0.3mm between SMD components.

2. Missing or Incorrect Reference Designators

Every component needs a unique reference designator (R1, C2, U3, etc.) clearly marked on the silkscreen. Missing designators cause confusion during assembly and testing.

3. Ignoring Panelization Requirements

Small boards need panelization for efficient SMT assembly. Include tooling rails, fiducials, and break-away tabs in your design.

4. Not Including a Soldermask Layer

Boards without soldermask are prone to solder bridging, especially on fine-pitch ICs. Always specify soldermask on both top and bottom layers.

5. Specifying Obsolete or Long-Lead Components

Using components that are end-of-life (EOL) or have 20+ week lead times can delay your entire project. Check availability before finalizing the BOM.

Tip: Many manufacturers offer free DFM review. Use it — they will catch these issues before production.

The PCBA Quality Inspection Process Explained

From AOI to X-Ray to functional testing — learn how professional PCBA manufacturers ensure every board works.

← Back to Blog

Quality inspection is a multi-stage process in professional PCBA manufacturing. Here is what happens at each stage:

1. SPI — Solder Paste Inspection

Before components are placed, the solder paste deposition is inspected. SPI checks for volume, height, area, and alignment — catching issues before any components are mounted.

2. AOI — Automated Optical Inspection

After reflow soldering, every board passes through AOI. High-resolution cameras check for missing components, tombstoning, solder bridges, insufficient solder, and component alignment.

3. X-Ray Inspection

For BGA, QFN, and other hidden solder joints, X-Ray inspection is essential. It reveals voids, bridges, and insufficient solder under components where AOI cannot see.

4. ICT — In-Circuit Testing

ICT uses a bed-of-nails fixture to test individual components: resistors, capacitors, diodes, and transistor junctions. It catches wrong component values and shorts.

5. FCT — Functional Testing

The final stage: boards are powered on and tested for actual functionality. This simulates real-world operation and catches any issues the earlier stages missed.
